Ignite Social Media: Busting the 10 Most Common Social Media Myths

  • Jim Tobin · 2 years ago
Good stuff, Lisa. As for "fads", I personally have no doubt in my mind that some popular social media stuff today is a fad and will go away. But I also have no doubt at all that the concept of two-way conversation is NOT a fad.

Social media marketing will exist if Beacon destroys Facebook. Tools will come and go and improve. The concept is too powerful to go away.

Hey, maybe I'm drinking the Kool Aid here, but it's grape flavor, it tastes good, gives me a little sugar buzz....

Great post, Lisa. I stand guilty of saying about 3 of these in public then regretting my words later for the same points you make here.

Plus, now I have a place to send others when they throw out the common misconceptions.

Great post lisa, just had to submit this one to Sphinn. Thanks for the reminder to stop running my facebook ads, just doing them for a test ;)

I think that Social Media is nothing more than advertising. That's not a bad thing.

We all have a limited time each day - I prefer to spend my time consuming media where I have a personal connection to the media creator - I'd rather spend 8 minutes watching the latest episode of Something To Be Desired, produced by Justin Kownacki (http://www.somethingtobedesired.com) than watching 8 minutes of CNN.

Why? I know Justin now, have met him, and I have met the cast and crew of STBD. For CNN? Well, they never invited me to any parties.

Tell it like it is. I don't know if this is a myth or not but the larger pool of marketing with social networking is a you scratch my back I'll scratch yours. This is not my style. When I see great minds and blogs at work I cant help but spread the news but I don't expect reciprocal anything.

Some marketers make it their credo to play favorites and ask to be written about or brown nose other bloggers and it's really kind of funny how the Internet can mimic real life in some ways.

I actually go full tilt on promoting more of other peoples works than I do my own. Not that my stuff isn't any good but I just wrote the damn thing so I want to see what else is out there and take a break.

Anyhow great post and I will surely pass it on as necessary.

@Jordan - Great point. Going off of what you said - I think there could be another myth added :

11 - "If you want coverage, Pitch to Bloggers" -
False. It's never a good practice to apply standard PR practices in social media, and as Jordan Peirce noted - it is equally worse to become a "brown noser" to bloggers that will benefit you. Not only will your intentions be earmarked as spam, but you aren't likely to benefit from the network of social media.

    Thanks again for your insight!

@Lisa Yup - I wrote a white paper on Social Networking - what you just said is one of the core elements of why commercial enterprise has a difficult time trying to figure it out.

My white paper is available on my site, if you should wish to check it out.

Great posting, so true. I think too many people are looking at Social Media as a 'magic elixir'

I hope a lot of people read this, it would make our jobs easier
